rishikesh
Rishikesh is referred to as the ‘Yoga Capital of the world and it is a quiet and religious filled town located in Uttarakhand which is in northern India. Blessed with the foothills of the Himalayas and the flow of the holy river of Ganga, Rishikesh beckons countless tourists around the year in the form of pilgrims, adventurers as well as wellness tourism.
Let us look at what makes Rishikesh such a fascinating and visited place.
1. Center for Spirituality and Yoga
Rishikesh is known for its ashrams and yoga retreat centers where people go to learn meditation, yoga and other spiritual skills. Ashram gained much of its popularity when The Beatles came to this ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the year 1968. This ashram, which is now popularly known as ‘The Beatles Ashram’, continues to draw visitors, especially diehard fans of Beatles.
Every March, the International Yoga Festival, takes place at this destination, bringing together practitioners, teachers, and seekers from every continent.
2. Adventurous undertakings
In addition to spirituality, Rishikesh is also an adventurer’s paradise, most especially on the banks of the Ganges River where there are exciting white-water rafting experiences in Shivpuri Rishikesh. The rapids offer different levels, making it ideal for novice courses and for the more ardent rafters too.
More of such adventure activities are bungee jumping, cliff jumping, kayaking, and even trekking on the foothills of the Himalayas.
3. Sacred Ganga Aarti
The Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan Ashram and Triveni Ghat is a sight to behold. At the time of sunset, the priests at a given point in time with ceremonial acts and incantations, place floating lamps on the holy river Ganges as an act of reverence to the river who is treated as a goddess that brings in water and thus life as per Hindu religion.
4. Architectural Marvels
The battle scribed on bodhi trees, Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula are suspension bridges situated over the banks of the Ganges. These bridges provide stunning views of the river and the city while traversing those bridges.
